OK. I'll kick off this forum as I started it in the first place! My own career turning point was when I found myself desperate to leave a job in publishing. The job was everything I had imagined I wanted, but had somehow ended up as a cauldron of office politics, favouritism and self publicity. I approached Judy Farquharson of the eponymous JFL, as I remembered she had been very helpful to me as a raw graduate. She had double booked our appointment with a lunch so we only had a few minutes together, but it gave her enough time to invite me back to consider a job in recruitment for publishing and PR.
Back then, aged 23, I still had aspirations to become a famous novelist or successful fiction editor but was lured by the opportunity to start a completely new career. I decided to accept Judy's offer, joined JFL and quickly realised that she had become my mentor - to the extent that I took over the company when she retired.
Earlier on today, before writing this, a colleague asked me if I were given the chance to live that day again, would I have made the same decision? And I suppose that is what defines a turning point. Yes.
