Microsoft Porn Feature Pukefest PR Perfection

Microsoft shot a video to promote a new version of their browser focusing on its 'privacy features' (or porn surfing mode). The tongue-in-cheek ad involving vomiting got pulled due to complaints ensuring online popularity. I could get prissy and say that I object to the way Microsoft equated privacy to porn surfing habits in this advert and trivalised the serious issue of online privacy, but that would be mean-spirited of me. Its a smart PR tactic by the advertising agency - creating demand for the illicit video and awareness of the browser 'privacy feature'. The literally offending advert can be found on YouTube (NSFW).

Contrast this with the Twitter efforts for technology firm Moonfruit by Bite PR, which although they created awareness of the name did nothing to provide understanding what it meant. Many web users will still be left puzzled as to what the devil it actually is, aside from being crowdsourced spam.  It just goes to prove be careful of what you measure.

Hi guys, thanks for the tips ;-).

Still, with people posting videos on youtube singing about our brand, creating images and posting 100,000+ tweets per day, it's not so bad.

It's been fascinating how they've played with the name, been creative and asked questions about it, which they've then answered as a community. There are lots of posts explaining what Moonfruit is from the crowd. Nice descriptions too.

Trials of the software are up 350%. I think some people can work it out ;-)

But we'll make it more obvious, so thanks for the feedback!

Joe
